Smoothing is the act of removing individual Track Points from a Track that fall outside of some criteria based on Point, Segment, or higher order Point Path properties. The following diagram illustrates the most common cases that smoothing can address.

Examples

A. Stopped - Points are indicating movement below a speed threshold.

B. Excessive Speed - Points are indicating movement above a speed threshold.

C. Excessive Elevation Change - Based on elevation data obtained for Points, elevation gain or loss is above some threshold.

D. Excessively Fast Rotation - Track segment rotation rate is above some threshold.

E. Noise Cloud - Points cluster around a central location, either indicating being stopped or that the GPS was left on, say, at camp or during a pit stop. See dedicated description and solution pages as this is a special case of some of the prior examples.
